Gunther, the cuddly fox

What do you need?

  • A Crochet hook sized 3,5mm (or another size, depending on the yarn you choose)
  • Stuffing material
  • Some black & white yarn, and 2 x 50 grams skeins of red/orange yarn.
  • A darning needle

Stitches

  • Chain (ch)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Slip stitch (ss)
  • Increasing (inc) = 2 stitches in 1
  • Decreasing (dc2tog = dc 2 stitches together)

How to make it?

First, you make the legs and the head. Then you crochet those together, creating the body. Tail and ears are made separately and sewn onto the fox afterwards. (You can choose to crochet tail & ears directly onto the body / head as well, but that’s not how it is written in the original pattern. In that case, you’ll have to make the ears and tail the other way around).

Advice!

Crochet through both loops, so the holes between the stitches are not too wide and the stuffing won’t show too much.

1) LEGS (make 4)

White

  • Round 0: start with a magic ring or make a small chain of 3 chainstitches and close it with a slipstitch. Round 1: 7 dc in the magic ring or in the circle you made with the 3 chains. (=7)
  • Round 2: 2dc in each dc (=14). Don’t close with a ss, continu to crochet in the next round, spirally) Round 3, 4 & 5: 1 dc in every dc. Finish with a ss. Cut the thread with about 5 cm extra, so you can weave in the end on the inside. (=14)

Main colour

Round 6 t/m 35: Attach main colour and continu to crochet spirally one dc in every dc below. (= 14)
HEAD Black (nose)

Round 0: start with a magic circle or a circle made of a small chain (of 3 chain stitches, closed with a ss)

Round 1: 7 dc in the circle (=7)

Round 2 & 3: continue in spirals: 1 dc in every dc. Finish with one ss and cut off yarn. Main colour Attach mail colour and continue working in spirals.

Round 4: 2dc in every dc below. (=14)

Round 5: 1dc in every dc below. (=14)

Round 6: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 2 dc] 4x, then one more increase and one dc. (=19)

Round 7: 1 dc in every dc (=19)

Round 8: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 2 dc] 5x, then one more increase and one dc (=25)

Round 9: 1dc in every dc below. (=25)

Round 10: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 4 dc] 5x (=30)

Round 11: 1dc in every dc below. (=30)

Round 12: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 5 dc] 5x (=35)

Round 13: 1dc in every dc below. (=35)

Round 14: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 6 dc] 5x (=40)

Round 15 & 16: dc all around (= 40)

Round 17: [2dc in 1dc (=inc), 7 dc] 5x (=45)

Round 18 & 19: dc all around (=45). Don’t cut off the yarn!

2) TRANSITION FROM HEAD TO LEGS

Continue from where you ended round 19 of the head:

Chain 3, take one leg and crochet 7 dc’s (=half of the leg). Chain 2, take the second leg and crochet 7 dc’s on that leg. Repeat that for leg 3 and 4, continue on leg for to go all around that last leg and crochet back in every stitch (including the in between chains) and the head.

3) BODY (we restart counting from here)

R1-6: Continue to crochet around the head and legs, make 6 full tours around them all.

R7: between the head and the first leg: (the neck), make one decrease (crochet 2 stitches together), 1dc, and one more decrease. Continue all around, and when you arrive at the other side of the ‘neck’ you repeat the [dec, dc, dec]. Continue the round.

R8 &9: DC’s all around.

R10: Repeat R7

R11 &12: DC’s all around

R13: Repeat R7

R14 &15: DC’s all around. End with a SS and cut off the yarn with a tail of about 50 cm. You could embroider the eyes on the head already, then start stuffing the legs, head and body. With the long end of yarn you can close the back. Leave a hole for the tail and don’t close the top of the head yet.

4) EARS (make 2)

White

R0: start with a magic circle or a circle made of 3chain stitches closed with a slipstitch.

R1: make 5 dc´s in the circle (continue in spirals)

R2: 2dc’s in first stitch, then 4 dc’s (=6)

R3: increase every second stitch (=9)

R4: increase very third stitch (=12) end with a slip stitch and cut the yarn. Main colour: Attach main colour to your work and continue in spirals:

R5: dc’s all around (=12).

R6: Increase every 3rd stitch. (=16)

R7: dc 8, inc 1, dc 8 stitches (=17) Cut yarn and keep a tail of 30 cm to sew the ear onto the head Make the second ear, stuff them a bit, and sew them onto the head: the front side you sew onto the front side of the head, the back side onto the back side of the head. Close the space between the ears as well. (Matress stitch is the most invisible way)

5) TAIL

White

R0: start with a magic circle or a circle made of 3chain stitches closed with a slipstitch.

R1: make 7 dc´s in the circle. (=7)

R2: increase every stitch (2 dc’s in every dc below) (=14)

R3: 7 dc, 1 inc, 7dc (15)

R4: increase every 3rd stitch (=20)

R5: dc all around (=20)

R6: Increase every 3th stitch, (=26)

R7: dc all around (=26). Finish with a slip stitch, and cut off the yarn.

Main colour

Attach main colour to your work and continue in spirals:

R 8, 9, & 10: dc all around (26)

R11: Dc2tog (decrease) every 5th & 6th stitch. (=21)

R12 & 13: Dc’s all around (21)

R 14: Dc2tog every 5th and 6th stitch. (=17)

R15 & 16: dc all around (=17)

R17: Dc2tog every 5th & 6th stitch (=15)

R18 & 19: dc’s all around.

End with a slip stitch and finish off. Stuff the tail firmly and sew it onto the hole you left open in end of the back. Weave in all loose ends.
